First of all I think that if someone wants to smoke that's their business. However, I do think that it's disgusting to see cigarette butts all over campus as if the people who smoke don't care about the campus or the environment. Like I said in my first blog, I do smoke occasionally so I can relate with people who smoke, but I also relate with those who don't because I understand how frustrating it is to have to walk through people's second hand smoke. I also think that it's really important to throw trash away and cigarette butts are trash!!! After I started noticing the butt's on the ground I decided to look for trashcans on my way to different classes and my car.
Guess what...there are trash cans at almost every entrance to every building. What's the big deal anyway, you can put your cigarette out and hold it in your had until you find a trash can. Isn't that what you'd do with your left over trash from lunch? Would you go through a drive through restaurant and throw the bag out the window or would you wait until you found a trash can to throw it away? I don't think that cigarette butt's are any different.
Another issue I think is rather important is how close to the buildings people are smoking. They are right in front of the door so you have to walk around them to get inside. Maybe if we put one of those trash can's with the ash tray on top twenty-five feet from the door they would not only smoke farther from the entrance, but the could put their butt out somewhere other than the ground. I know there are signs stating that you need to be twenty-five feet from the entrance to smoke but no one enforces it, or at least I've never seen it enforced. Maybe the people who smoke don't know how it bothers other students so they've gradually started to smoke where ever they wanted not knowing it was affecting anyone. They also might think that no one cares if they smoke right in front of the building because there hasn't been any consequences and no one has said anything to them about it? Either way something needs to be done.

Agreed, something should be done with the smoking and cig butts. I believe a good way to get something done is to have someone speak up and tell them to show some respect to those around them and at least throw away their cigarette butts.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that smokers should be more considerate of the non-smokers. Designating smoking areas has shown to be non-effective so maybe some type of student protesting may help? Personally, I don't mind seeing the butts lying around. It is disgusting and I don't see the point in leaving them on the ground when there's ashtrays but people will do as they please.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people shouldnt leave there cigarette buts lying all over the floor its annoying and gross. I really hate it when people are smoking right outside of a buliding and I have to walk right through the smoke. The campus needs to enforce the rules when t comes to smkoing and smokers need to be more considertate.
